With the region under a flash ice warning and overnight freezing temperatures expected to continue, City of Wrenford crews are actively treating main roads and residents are being reminded to adjust their driving habits for safer travel.
Roads & Winter Maintenance crews are on the road around the clock. Main roads are plowed when there is five centimetres of snow, and residential streets follow when the snow reaches eight centimetres. If you are driving, allow extra travel time and keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you. Flash ice can form quickly on bridges, overpasses, and shaded stretches of road, even when the rest of the street looks clear.
"Before you set out, make sure your vehicle is ready and check for the latest road conditions," says City Manager Robert Eng. "Keeping your tires, brakes, and lights in good shape makes a big difference when the weather turns slick."
Drivers should keep an emergency kit in their vehicle at all times. Make sure it includes blankets, non-perishable food, water, booster cables, a shovel, and a flashlight. If you get stuck or your car breaks down, stay with your vehicle, turn on your hazard lights, and call 911 or the Wrenford Police Service for help.
Watch for the overnight on-street parking ban, which runs from December 1 to March 31 between 2:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. on main roads. Removing your car during these hours gives our crews the space they need to clear snow safely and keep traffic moving. If you have a verified mobility condition, you can apply for a snow route parking ban exemption through the City.
Residents are also asked to keep their walkways and driveways clear. Shoveling snow promptly helps prevent slips and falls, and using sand or ice melt responsibly protects the environment while keeping paths safe for neighbours and pedestrians. If you need a snow route parking ban exemption or have questions about winter service timings, please reach out to the City.
