Wrenford Fire Rescue crews responded to a structure fire on Mercer Street on Monday evening. The fire was reported at approximately 6:30 p.m. at a two-storey home near the downtown core.
Firefighters from Fire Station 1 (Headquarters), along with crews from Stations 2, 3, 4 and 5, arrived on scene to find heavy smoke coming from the second floor. The fire was brought under control by 8:15 p.m. All residents and pets were able to leave the building safely before crews arrived. No injuries were reported.
Firefighters ventilated the structure and conducted a thorough overhaul to ensure the fire did not spread to neighbouring properties. The home sustained significant smoke and water damage, but the main structure is stable. Utility crews were also on site to shut off natural gas and power while the fire department investigated.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by fire prevention officers. Residents are reminded to test their smoke and carbon monoxide alarms regularly and to ensure all escape routes are clear. If you need help checking your alarms or want to learn more about home fire safety, the Fire Rescue team offers free inspection visits for seniors and low-income residents.
"Firefighters worked quickly to protect lives and neighbouring properties," says Deputy Fire Chief Simon Hartley. "We are relieved that everyone is safe. Our priority is always getting people out quickly and keeping the fire from spreading."
Fire officials are asking anyone who saw a vehicle parked on Mercer Street around the time of the incident to contact us. The street was closed between Fallsview Road and Water Street from 6:30 p.m. until approximately 10:00 p.m. for safety and access.
