The Wrenford Fire Department is reminding residents to follow fireworks safety rules as the city prepares to celebrate Canada Day on July 1.
Under Ontario law, the public can use handheld fireworks and sparklers between 1:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. on July 1. On New Year's Eve, the allowed hours run from 11:00 a.m. to midnight. Outside these dates, fireworks are prohibited in the city.
Always read the label before lighting a firework. Set them up on a clear, flat surface away from buildings, trees and dry grass. Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose nearby in case a firework does not light properly. Never relight a “dud” firework—wait 20 minutes and soak it in water before throwing it away.
Supervise children closely and keep pets indoors during celebrations. Loud noises and bright flashes can scare animals. If you hear fireworks being used outside the legal hours, or if you see unsafe behaviour, call 311 to report a noise complaint or a by-law infraction.
“Fireworks are fun, but they are also tools that require respect,” says Deputy Fire Chief Simon Hartley. “When you follow the safety steps and stick to the legal hours, you help keep your neighbours, pets and firefighters safe.”
