Fire department launches winter fire safety awareness campaign

The Wrenford Fire Department is launching a winter fire safety awareness campaign to help residents stay safe as temperatures drop. The campaign highlights key precautions for home heating, cooking and lithium-ion batteries during the colder months.

With winter setting in, the fire department has noticed an uptick in calls related to space heaters, unattended cooking and smoking materials. Deputy Fire Chief Simon Hartley says the department wants to make sure every household is prepared before the first snowfall.

"We see a steady rise in structure fires once the cold sets in, and many of them are completely preventable," said Deputy Fire Chief Simon Hartley. "A few simple habits at home can keep your family safe and protect your property."

The campaign focuses on three main areas:

Space heaters and fireplaces

Portable space heaters are a common cause of winter fires. Always turn them off when you leave the room or go to bed. Use only models listed by a qualified testing lab, and place them on a solid, flat surface. Keep them at least one metre away from curtains, bedding and high-traffic areas. Never plug a space heater into an extension cord or power strip.

Cooking safety

Cooking remains the top cause of home fires. Stay in the kitchen when using the stove, and keep flammable items away from the burners. If a grease fire starts, cover it with a metal lid and turn off the heat. Never use water on a grease fire.

Lithium-ion batteries

Batteries for phones, laptops and e-mobility devices can overheat or catch fire, especially if they are damaged or not certified. Only use batteries and chargers with a CSA or ULC logo. Charge devices at room temperature, and never leave them charging unattended or in exits like hallways. If a battery is swollen, leaking or hot, stop using it and take it to a recycling depot.

Residents can pick up free smoke and carbon monoxide alarm batteries at Fire Station 1 (Headquarters) during regular business hours. The station is located at 210 Water Street, and the front desk is open Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
