The Wrenford Fire Rescue team will conduct ice rescue training at Ambrel Lake from January 22 to February 2. During these dates, crews will open holes in the ice and create controlled openings in the water to practice emergency response techniques.
The training involves using specialized equipment like ice rescue sleds and throw bags. Crews will simulate rescues in shallow and deeper water sections of the lake. Fire trucks and support vehicles will be parked along Ambrel Lake Road near the park entrance. Residents and park users are strongly encouraged to stay away from the training area. The training zone will be marked with barrier tape and warning signs. Please follow the directions of fire personnel and use caution by staying well back from any openings in the ice.
"This training is essential for keeping our community safe during the coldest months," says Deputy Fire Chief Simon Hartley. "Firefighters rely on regular practice to respond quickly and safely when ice breaks through or someone falls in. We appreciate the public's patience as we prepare for potential emergencies."
Winter ice conditions change quickly. Residents should never walk on ice without proper gear or checking local ice reports. If you see someone in trouble on the ice, call 9-1-1 immediately. Do not attempt a rescue yourself.
While you avoid the training site, remember that Ambrel Lake Park and the surrounding trails remain open to the public. Please stick to designated paths and report any concerns to 311. Fire Station 4 is located nearby and serves the north end of the city. Our firefighters are available around the clock for emergencies.
