(Wrenford, ON — September 20, 2024) — The City of Wrenford is investing $2.1 million to upgrade the sorting equipment at the East Wrenford Waste Management Facility, located at 3500 Concession 4 Road. The project, approved by Council earlier this month, will expand our ability to process plastics, paper and glass, and support our goal of diverting sixty per cent of residential waste from the landfill by 2030.
The new automated sorting lines will replace equipment that has been in service for over a decade. Workers at the facility will still manually check materials, but the upgraded machinery will handle a much larger volume of single-stream recycling. This means residents can continue to place all accepted recyclables in their Blue Box. The upgrades also include a new baler for cardboard and paper, which will create a steady supply of raw materials for local manufacturers.
"This investment keeps Wrenford's recycling program ahead of the curve," said Isabel Moreno, Economic Development Manager. "When we send more clean materials to the sorter, we create a reliable supply chain for our local manufacturers. It saves money for the City, lowers costs for local businesses, and keeps more waste out of our environment."
The project is funded through the City's current capital budget, with a portion of the work completed by the end of the year. Construction on the new sorting hall will begin in November and run through the spring. During this time, the facility will remain open for drop-off services, including household hazardous waste and leaf and yard waste. Standard curbside collection schedules will not change.
Residents are encouraged to keep sorting their materials as usual.
