East Wrenford Waste Facility receives provincial environmental award

On November 6, 2024, the City of Wrenford announced that the East Wrenford Waste Management Facility has received the 2024 Ontario Environmental Stewardship Award. The provincial honour recognises the depot’s outstanding progress in waste diversion, resource recovery, and community education since it opened.

Provincial judges highlighted the facility’s ability to keep recyclable and organic materials out of the landfill. Thanks to consistent resident participation in the Blue Box and Green Bin programmes, plus strong drop-off numbers for household hazardous waste, electronics, and mattresses, the site has consistently met or exceeded provincial diversion targets. The award also recognises the facility’s clean air and water monitoring systems, which ensure all operations meet strict environmental standards.

“This recognition belongs to every resident who sorts their waste correctly and visits our depot,” said Ben Achterberg, Waste Programs Supervisor. “Your everyday choices are what make our diversion numbers go up and keep our neighbourhoods clean.”

Residents can continue supporting the facility’s success by following the weekly collection schedule and using the depot for items that do not fit in curbside carts. The landfill and drop-off depot operate Monday to Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Residents are asked to keep carts on their property and place them at the curb by 7:00 a.m. on collection day to help collection crews work safely and on time. Remember that Blue Box recycling is collected on the same day as your Green Bin.
