East Wrenford waste facility expands recycling sorting capacity

Wrenford Council approved a major upgrade to the East Wrenford Waste Management Facility during its regular meeting on April 8, 2024. The project will add new sorting equipment and expand the material handling area at the site on Concession 4 Road.

The upgrade increases daily sorting capacity from 1,200 to 1,680 tonnes. It also introduces a new optical sorting line that uses cameras and air jets to separate plastics, paper, and metals more accurately. This change will reduce contamination in your Blue Box recycling and help the city reach its long-term waste diversion targets.

"This upgrade means we can process more of your Blue Box materials correctly and send less to the landfill," says Ben Achterberg, Waste Programs Supervisor. "We want to make sure the recycling you put out actually gets recycled."

Construction is scheduled to begin on May 15, 2024. The city has planned the work to keep the drop-off depot open for residents. Crews will run some work shifts in the evenings and on weekends to limit noise and traffic impacts. You may see extra trucks and equipment on Concession 4 Road during the build.

The project is funded through the capital works program. The total budget is $4.2 million.

Residents can check the Garbage & Recycling page for a full list of what is accepted in the Blue Box program. If you have questions about the construction schedule or temporary changes to depot services, call Civic Operations at 519-555-0112.
