Wrenford Council voted unanimously on June 3, 2024, to endorse the City's Vision Zero strategy. This new plan sets a clear goal to eliminate traffic-related fatalities and serious injuries on Wrenford roads. The strategy ensures that every resident can travel through the city with confidence and security.
The Vision Zero strategy is based on a thorough review of collision data, feedback from the community, and road safety best practices. It rests on three main principles:
- Reducing fatalities and serious injuries on Wrenford roads.
- Improving access to schools, parks, and community services.
- Addressing the safety needs of vulnerable road users, including children and older adults.
The plan uses a Safe Systems Approach. This means the City layers different types of protection for everyone on the road, from drivers to cyclists and pedestrians. It builds a culture of shared responsibility for safe mobility.
"Safety is the foundation of a thriving community, and our Vision Zero strategy shows our commitment to making Wrenford safer for everyone," said Mayor Danielle Okafor-Price. "This plan asks us to rethink how we design and use our streets, ensuring that you, as a driver, cyclist, or pedestrian, share the responsibility for creating safer roads."
The strategy aims to reduce serious injuries and fatalities by at least 5% each year, with a target of a 25% reduction by 2030. To reach this goal, the City has approved a three-phase implementation plan. Phase one is already underway. It includes the installation of speed humps and raised crosswalks near 12 elementary schools across the city. The City also recently finished a safety review of the Tamsin Street and Mercer Street intersection and a study of high-crash spots along Corvid Way.
Engineering staff will work with community groups, the Wrenford Police Service, and provincial partners to carry out the strategy. The goal is to save lives, prevent injuries, and keep public safety at the heart of every road project.
