On July 22, 2024, Wrenford City Council approved the Green Line program for regional transit expansion. The decision covers a new route alignment, a phased construction plan, and the procurement process to bring faster, more reliable transit to residents across the city.
“The Green Line program is a pivotal step in improving mobility for all Wrenford residents,” said Mayor Danielle Okafor-Price. “It connects our neighbourhoods, employment hubs and key destinations, making it easier for you to get where you need to go.”
The approved plan divides the project into three phases. Phase One will build the core route from Downtown through the Benchlands neighbourhood. Phase Two will extend service northward to Northgate, linking residential areas with Tamsin College and local businesses. Phase Three will reach Industrial Park East, providing a direct link for shift workers and logistics employees.
Administration’s recommendations balance the need to move forward with Phase One while managing construction risks. The city will deliver the project using a design-build approach, meaning contractors will handle both the detailed design and construction. The procurement process will begin in September 2024, with a shortlist of qualified teams announced by November. Detailed design work is scheduled to start in early 2025, with construction following shortly after.
The Green Line program will work alongside the existing Wrenford Transit fixed routes, providing a higher-frequency backbone for the system. By improving transit reliability and frequency, the city aims to support sustainable growth, attract new businesses, and create local jobs during both the construction and operational phases.
As Wrenford continues to grow, balanced investment in transit ensures that all residents can live, work and play sustainably. The program aligns with the city’s long-term capital works strategy and supports the regional goal of reducing congestion along major corridors.
Residents can view the full route maps, construction timeline and public engagement summary on the Transit page. Questions about the program can be directed to the Transit team through Service Wrenford or by calling 519-555-0114.
