Council approves 20-year plan to revitalize Ambrel Lake Park

At its meeting on Monday, June 17, 2024, Wrenford Council approved the Ambrel Lake Park Master Plan. This 20-year vision lays out a roadmap to upgrade the boardwalks, playground, and picnic shelters while protecting the shoreline of Ambrel Lake. The plan was developed by the City's Parks & Trails team with input from community stakeholders and residents like you.

The master plan outlines three phases of work. Phase 1 focuses on the existing boardwalk and shoreline stabilization. Council also approved $1.2 million from the 2024 capital budget to start early design work and environmental assessments. The project matches the City's climate adaptation strategy, using flood protection and durable materials that handle changing weather.

Over the past year, staff held three public drop-in sessions and an online survey, gathering feedback from more than 800 residents. You asked for better accessibility for strollers and wheelchairs, more native plantings for pollinators, and expanded seating along the lake edge. “Council is committed to investing in the spaces that bring our community together,” says Fiona Gallagher, General Manager of Community Services. “This master plan gives us the long-term vision we need to ensure Ambrel Lake Park remains a vibrant, accessible destination for families, dog walkers, and nature lovers for decades to come.”

The City will now move into detailed design and procurement. You can view the full master plan report and upcoming engagement dates on the Parks & Trails page. Construction is expected to begin in the spring of 2025. The City will send you advance notice for any temporary trail closures or parking changes once a contractor is selected.
