Cooling centres open at Northgate Aquatic Centre and Tamsin Valley

The City of Wrenford is opening two cooling centres starting today, June 28, 2024, to help residents stay cool and comfortable during warm weather. The centres are located at the Northgate Aquatic Centre and the Tamsin Valley Leisure Centre. Both locations will be open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. until further notice.

Residents can walk in without registration, payment, or identification. Seating, drinking water, and washrooms are available at both sites. The centres are a safe place for anyone who does not have air conditioning or who wants to escape the heat for a few hours.

When temperatures rise, it is important to take steps to stay cool. Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you do not feel thirsty. Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing and stay out of the sun during the hottest part of the day. Close your curtains or blinds to keep your home cooler. If you have a garden or a porch, try to sit in the shade.

Checking on your neighbours and friends is one of the most important things you can do. Older adults, people who live alone, and those with chronic health conditions are more likely to feel the effects of heat. Plan to check on them at least twice a day. If you notice signs of heat-related illness, such as dizziness, nausea, or confusion, move the person to a cool place and call 9-1-1.

"We want every resident to know where they can go when the heat gets too intense," says Fiona Gallagher, GM Community Services. "These centres are free and open to everyone. Please look out for your neighbours and share this information with anyone who might need a break from the heat."

Environment Canada issues a Heat Warning when daytime and overnight temperatures reach specific thresholds for consecutive days. During a warning, the City activates additional cooling spaces across the community. You can stay updated on heat alerts and emergency information by signing up for the Wrenford Emergency Alert Network.

If you need help finding a cooling centre or have questions about extreme heat safety, call 311 from inside the city or 519-555-0100 from outside.
