Construction begins on new fire station in Larch Heights

On Thursday, August 15, 2024, the City of Wrenford officially broke ground on a new fire station in the Larch Heights neighbourhood. A short ceremony was held at the future site, 350 Larch Heights Drive, with Mayor Danielle Okafor-Price, City Manager Robert Eng, and Fire Chief Darren MacAulay marking the start of construction.

The $5.2 million facility will span 2,800 square metres and is on track to open in March 2026. Designed to meet the rapid growth of Ward 2, the station will house two fire engines, a rescue unit, and dedicated space for training and administration. Beyond emergency response, the building is planned as a community hub. It will feature a multi-purpose room for fire prevention workshops and local meetings, a publicly accessible washroom, and a dedicated recycling drop-off point for area residents.

“We are building this station to keep our Larch Heights neighbours safe while giving the community a place to connect,” said Fire Chief Darren MacAulay. “The multi-purpose room will host fire safety workshops and neighbourhood meetings, and we have included a public washroom and recycling drop-off to serve the growing area. Faster response times and stronger community ties are what this project is all about.”

The project followed a thorough review through the Development Applications process. Council approved the site and design in early 2024 after staff confirmed it met the requirements of the Official Plan and Zoning bylaw. Construction crews will now begin site grading and foundation work. Plan your routes around the construction zone. Avoid Larch Heights Drive between Benchlands Drive and Northgate Boulevard during peak morning and afternoon hours. Report any dust, noise concerns, or road damage to 311 or email [email protected].
