City reminds residents of sidewalk clearing responsibilities

As the first major snowfall of the season approaches Wrenford this week, the City of Wrenford is reminding all property owners to clear their sidewalks promptly after the storm ends.

Under the Winter Maintenance and Parking By-law 2020-097, you must clear snow and ice from the full width of the sidewalks next to your property by 10:00 a.m. the morning after a storm. This rule applies seven days a week, including holidays. Clearing your walkway keeps pedestrians safe and helps snowplows work efficiently on nearby streets.

If you do not clear your sidewalk, the City can issue a fine. Penalties start at $150.00 for a first offence and increase to $300.00 for repeat offences within the same winter season. The City also reserves the right to clear the snow itself and bill you for the cost.

"Getting sidewalks cleared quickly keeps our neighbourhoods safe for pedestrians and makes it easier for snowplows to do their work," said James Whitford, Roads Superintendent. "Even a small amount of shoveled path makes a big difference for seniors and neighbours with strollers."

If you cannot clear your walkway due to age or a medical condition, you can hire a neighbour, a contractor, or a volunteer group to do it for you. If your mobility makes it difficult to live near a cleared sidewalk, you may also qualify for a parking exemption so your vehicle does not block the plow during the overnight on-street parking ban from December 1 to March 31.
