City invests in green infrastructure grants for local businesses

The City of Wrenford is investing $250,000 in a new grant program to help local businesses install green infrastructure across the city. Starting next week, business owners can apply for funding to cover projects like rain gardens, green roofs, and electric vehicle charging stations. The goal is to cut down on stormwater runoff, lower energy costs, and make downtown and neighbourhood businesses more climate-resilient.

The Wrenford Green Business Infrastructure Grant covers up to 60 per cent of eligible project costs, with a maximum payout of $15,000. Funds can cover engineered soil and plant systems that naturally soak up rainwater, rooftop gardens that reduce building heat, and on-site charging spots for electric vehicles. If you run a registered business in Wrenford with a physical storefront or facility, you are eligible to apply.

“Upgrading our infrastructure is essential work that protects public health and allows our city to grow and adapt,” says Mayor Danielle Okafor-Price. “This grant directly supports our climate adaptation plan by helping businesses reduce their environmental footprint while improving the look and feel of our streets. We want Wrenford to lead the way in sustainable growth.”

To apply, you will need to submit a simple project outline and a cost estimate from a licensed contractor through the Wrenford eLicence Portal. You will also need to provide a 40 per cent contribution through cash, in-kind donations, or existing business savings. The City will review applications on a rolling basis and notify successful applicants within three weeks. You must finish and inspect your project by October 31, 2024.
