Starting Monday, April 15, 2024, City crews will begin installing new shelters at eight busy bus stops in the downtown core. You will see the work along Mercer Street, Tamsin Street, and near the Downtown Transit Terminal on Market Square. The project aims to give you a dry, safe place to wait while you ride Wrenford Transit.
Installation takes place Monday to Friday, from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Over the next three weeks, crews will set the shelter foundations, assemble the frames, and attach the glass panels. You may notice temporary lane shifts and short-term parking restrictions around the stops while the work is active. Pedestrian walkways will remain open at all times, and clear signage will guide you around the work zones.
"These shelters are a critical piece of our commitment to making transit more comfortable and reliable for every rider, regardless of the weather. We know downtown is our busiest hub, and these upgrades will improve the daily commute for hundreds of residents," says Daniel Osei, Transit Manager.
If your usual stop is affected, you may see a small temporary sign directing you to a nearby safe waiting area. Keep an eye out for the posted signs and allow a few extra minutes for your trip. All work is planned to keep traffic flowing, and crews will clean up the area each day before they leave.
Once installed, the shelters will feature seating, secure bike racks, and digital route displays. This project is part of the city's broader plan to upgrade transit infrastructure and support our growing ridership.
