The City of Wrenford is closing ice skate rentals at the outdoor rink in Ambrel Lake Park for the remainder of the winter season. The closure takes effect today, December 20, 2024.
Maintenance crews discovered a mechanical issue with one of the ice resurfacing compressors earlier this week. While a backup unit is available, running it at full capacity during the current warm spells would put too much strain on the equipment and could cause lasting damage. To protect the long-term health of the rink system, the City has made the call to end the skating season early.
"We know many residents look forward to the outdoor rink every year, and we appreciate your patience," said Maya Chen-Watson, Parks Planner. "Our maintenance team is already planning the necessary repairs so the ice surface will be safe and reliable when we open again next winter."
Residents who were planning to skate at Ambrel Lake Park can still enjoy the ice at other City-operated outdoor rinks. The City maintains several seasonal rinks across the city, complete with skate rentals and public skating sessions. You can review the full list of locations and check daily ice conditions on the Outdoor skating rink locations page. If you prefer to book a private session, you can reserve ice time through the Public skating sessions and schedules portal.
The rink will remain closed until spring thaw. Any remaining rental bookings will be automatically refunded to your original payment method within five business days. For questions about rentals or refund processing, contact the Recreation team at [email protected] or call 519-555-0100.
Thank you for a wonderful skating season. We look forward to seeing you back on the ice next year.
