Wrenford Paramedic Services launches winter safety campaign

Wrenford Paramedic Services is reminding residents to take simple steps to stay safe and healthy during the cold winter months. The campaign launches today at the City's emergency services headquarters and runs through the end of February.

With temperatures expected to drop below freezing and snow accumulating across the city, paramedics are seeing a rise in cold-related injuries, slips and falls on icy sidewalks, and carbon monoxide poisoning from improperly used heaters.

"The winter season brings unique risks to our community," says Chief Yusuf Karimi, Chief of Wrenford Paramedic Services. "By preparing your home, checking on neighbours, and knowing what to do in an emergency, you can help keep yourself and your family safe all season long."

The campaign highlights four key areas of winter safety:

  • Keep warm: Use space heaters safely, keep a safe distance from curtains and bedding, and never use an oven or stove to heat your home.
  • Prevent falls: Shovel snow promptly, use non-slip footwear, and apply ice melt to walkways. Remember to plow and clear sidewalks within 24 hours after a storm.
  • Check your carbon monoxide alarms: Install working alarms on every level of your home and test them monthly. Open-fireplaces and wood stoves should be inspected annually.
  • Plan for emergencies: Keep an emergency kit with non-perishable food, water, and a flashlight. Sign up for Wrenford Emergency Alert Network to get real-time alerts during severe weather.

Paramedics are also urging residents to look out for vulnerable neighbours, especially seniors and those living alone. If you see someone struggling with snow removal or notice their mail piling up, check on them or call the non-emergency line at 519-555-0100 if you suspect a medical issue.
