As the leaves fall and the air turns crisp, the Civic Operations Centre is gearing up for the cold months ahead. On November 10, 2023, the Roads & Winter Maintenance team began its annual fleet preparation at the Civic Operations Centre, ensuring all plows and salt trucks are road-ready for the season.
The City divides Wrenford into six winter sectors to keep operations organized and efficient. Crews will focus on main roads, bus routes, and bridges as soon as 5 centimetres of snow fall. Residential streets are cleared once there is 8 centimetres of accumulation, and you can expect them to be plowed within 48 hours of that event. This phased approach helps the City maintain safe travel while balancing the cost of winter maintenance.
"Our crews work around the clock to keep our roads safe, and we rely on residents to help by moving their cars on time," said James Whitford, Roads Superintendent. "We are ready to tackle whatever the season throws at us."
Residents play an important role in keeping the city moving. The overnight on-street parking ban runs from December 1 to March 31, between 2:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. To avoid a ticket or having your vehicle towed, park on the opposite side of the street before the ban begins. You can find a full map of snow routes and apply for an exemption if you have a verified mobility condition by visiting the Snow route parking bans page. You must also keep the sidewalks in front of your property clear of snow and ice. If you or your neighbours need help, consider volunteering as a snow angel to assist seniors and people with mobility challenges.
When snow piles up, make sure it does not block catch basins. Clogged basins can cause street flooding and damage your vehicle. If a basin is blocked, break up the ice and remove the snow, or report it using the online service request form. The City is committed to keeping Wrenford safe and moving all winter long.
