City launches 2024 winter snow clearing plan ahead of first storm

On November 5, 2023, the City of Wrenford announced its 2024 winter snow clearing plan. The plan sets out how Roads & Winter Maintenance crews will clear streets, sidewalks, and transit stops to keep the city safe and accessible through the cold months.

The updated plan uses a priority system to guide crews during storms. Main roads and arterials are cleared as soon as snow reaches 5 centimetres. Secondary roads and hillier areas follow closely behind. Residential streets are cleared once snow reaches 8 centimetres. This helps crews focus on the roads that carry the most traffic first.

“Keeping our roads safe and clear is a top priority for the City,” said Samuel Adeyemi, General Manager of Infrastructure and Planning. “By using a clear priority system and keeping our equipment ready, we can respond quickly to storms and keep Wrenford moving for everyone.”

To get ready for the season, the City has:

  • Stockpiled salt and sand at the Civic Operations Centre.
  • Completed maintenance checks on all plows, salt trucks, and brine spreaders.
  • Provided specialized winter driving and ice control training for all operators.

Sidewalks near parks, City facilities, and major transit stops are a priority. The City also maintains walkways at bus stops along fixed routes. Property owners and tenants are responsible for clearing snow and ice from the sidewalks in front of their buildings. Residents are strongly encouraged to shovel their own driveways and front yards.

During the winter season, an overnight on-street parking ban runs from December 1 to March 31, from 2:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. This gives crews the space they need to clear main roads safely. If you need an exemption because of a medical condition, you can apply for a Snow Route Parking Ban Exemption.

If you notice a pothole, a missing sign, or a problem with a street light after a storm, you can report it online or by calling 519-555-0100. For updates on snow clearing in Wrenford, visit the City’s Roads & Winter Maintenance page or follow official City channels on social media.
