City hall plaza accessible walkway cleared for winter holidays

City crews from the Roads & Winter Maintenance team have finished clearing the accessible walkways around City Hall plaza, keeping the downtown hub open and safe for holiday visitors and shoppers this December.

Under the City's winter maintenance rules, accessible paths are cleared before adjacent roads and bike lanes. Crews follow a priority system to make sure pedestrians can move through the downtown core without barriers. The team applies brine and salt to the plaza routes to melt ice and improve traction for wheelchairs, strollers and mobility aids.

"We know that a clear path is not just a convenience—it is a necessity for an inclusive community," said Samuel Adeyemi, GM Infrastructure and Planning. "Our crews are working around the clock to keep these routes free of snow and ice, so everyone can get to where they need to go safely during the busy holiday season."

You can help keep the plaza clear and safe. Property owners and visitors should shovel their own sidewalks and driveways by 10 a.m. the morning after a snowfall. If you see a blocked path or a hazard on a City-maintained walkway, report it through Wrenford 311 or by calling 519-555-0100. Keep catch basins clear of snow and ice, dress warmly, and give winter plows plenty of space. For tips on staying safe and connected during the cold months, see the Winter for older adults page.
