Ambrel Lake Park ice skate rentals open for winter season

The outdoor ice rink at Ambrel Lake Park is officially open for the winter season, and ice skate rentals are available starting today, December 29, 2023. Residents can drop in to rent a pair of skates from the warming hut near the north end of the rink, or bring their own equipment to enjoy the freshly flooded surface.

The rink is maintained by the City’s parks and trails crew, who push and flood the ice daily to keep conditions smooth and safe. Skate rentals are offered from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. on weekends. The rental desk closes thirty minutes before the rink closes. You can find a full schedule of all outdoor skating rink locations across the city on the City website.

"We want every resident to feel welcome on the ice this winter, whether you are a first-time skater or a seasoned regular," says Caroline Dubé, Recreation Programs Coordinator. "Rentals are kept affordable, and we have a steady supply of helmets available for youth at no charge."

Before you head out, check the latest facility information and hours to make sure the rink is open, especially on holidays or during periods of extreme cold. The City plows the main parking lot and access paths at Ambrel Lake Park regularly after snowfall, but please wear winter boots and walk carefully on icy sidewalks. If you notice a crack in the ice or a broken fence post, report it using the report a park maintenance issue form so crews can respond quickly.

Skate rental fees and additional safety rules are posted at the warming hut and online. For more details on how to book ice time, sharpen blades, or find programs for learning to skate, visit the ice skate rentals and sharpening page.
