Public works and maintenance

Learn how the City maintains roads, trails, and parks, and find out how to report issues or request seasonal services.

What we maintain

The City Services department takes care of the high-use lands that keep our community moving and connected. This includes the road network, sidewalks, multi-use trails, parks, playgrounds, and the Wrenford Cemetery. We also manage stormwater drainage and work with the Tamsin Valley Conservation Authority on shoreline and floodplain projects along the Tamsin River and Corvid Creek.

How to report an issue

If you notice a pothole, a cracked sidewalk, a broken street light, or a drainage problem, tell us right away. The fastest way to report it is through the Wrenford 311 Service Request Tracking Portal on our website or through the city app. You can also call 311 inside city limits, or 519-555-0100 if you are calling from outside the city. When you report a problem, you will get a reference number so you can check on the status online.

Seasonal maintenance

Winter maintenance and parking bans

Our roads and winter maintenance crews work around the clock when snow falls. Main roads are plowed as soon as the snow reaches five centimetres, and residential streets are cleared at eight centimetres. From December 1 to March 31, an overnight parking ban is in effect from 2:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. on all main roads so crews can work safely. Residents on snow routes must clear their adjacent sidewalks within 24 hours of a snowfall. Failing to clear your sidewalk can result in a fine under the Community Standards By-law 2023-099.

Spring and summer sweeping

Street sweeping runs from April to May by neighbourhood. Keep an eye on the Service Alerts page for the schedule in your area. Do not park on the street during the sweep dates, or your vehicle may be ticketed under the Traffic and Parking By-law 2014-075.

Park and trail care

Parks staff open outdoor facilities in late spring and close them in late fall. We maintain playgrounds, resurface sports fields, and treat catch basins for West Nile virus from June to September. The Tamsin Valley Conservation Authority leads the West Nile programme, and the City handles the actual treating. The Tamsin River Trail System is maintained year-round for walking and cycling, but trails may be closed temporarily during high water or after severe storms.

Permits and fees

If you need to work in the public right-of-way, you will need a permit. This includes excavation for utilities, installing a seasonal sidewalk patio, or placing flower boxes on the sidewalk.

  • Excavation in the public right-of-way: $350.00 application fee. Applications must be submitted at least 14 days before work starts.
  • Seasonal sidewalk patio: $350.00 application fee for use from May 1 to October 31.
  • Winter patio: $200.00 application fee for use from December 1 to March 31.
  • Outdoor displays and planters: $75.00 application fee.

All permits must be insured and meet the Engineering Standards set out in the Ontario Building Code, 1992. You can pick up a permit form at Wrenford City Hall or submit it online.

Tree care and requests

The City maintains street trees along the road right-of-way. If you want a tree trimmed or inspected, submit a request through Wrenford 311. We prioritize trees that block sight lines, interfere with power lines, or pose a safety hazard. Pruning is done from October to April to protect wildlife nesting season. For private trees on your property, you will need a licensed arborist. The City cannot pay for private tree work.
