About public hearings in Wrenford

Public hearings give you a chance to share your views on important city plans, zoning changes, and proposed by-laws. Under the Planning Act and the Municipal Act, 2001, the City must hold a hearing for certain matters. We also hold hearings for other issues that affect our community.

Council meetings are open to the public. You can watch them live on the City website.

Regular Council meetings happen on the second and fourth Monday of each month at 6:00 p.m. in the Council Chambers at City Hall. Public hearings are usually scheduled during these meetings.

How to participate

You can take part in a public hearing in three ways. You do not have to choose just one.

  • In person: Attend the hearing at City Hall. If you want to speak, you must register with the City Clerk's office before the meeting starts. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Online: Join the live stream on the City's website. You can also register to speak remotely by contacting the City Clerk. The Clerk will do their best to set up a video link for you.
  • Written submission: Send your comments before the deadline. We will read your letter aloud or hand it to Council members during the hearing.

Written submission rules

When you send a letter or email, please include your full name and mailing address. If you are writing on behalf of a group, include the names and addresses of everyone in the group, and name the person speaking for them. You can email your comments to [email protected] or mail them to the attention of Wrenford City Council, c/o City Clerk, 100 Mercer Street, Wrenford, ON N4Q 1A1.

Submissions that arrive after the deadline will not be added to the official agenda. We also cannot accept submissions that contain hate speech, discriminatory language, or defamation. The City Clerk will review all materials before they go to Council.

Speaking time

Each person gets five minutes to speak. This time does not include questions from Council members. Keep your comments focused on the specific by-law or plan being discussed. If you want to show pictures or slides, tell the Clerk by the end of the business day before the meeting. They will arrange the equipment for you.

What happens during the hearing

Public hearings follow a set order. The Mayor opens the hearing and explains the purpose. City staff will present their report and answer questions. Then, the floor opens for public comments. You will be called in the order you registered. After everyone who wants to speak has had their turn, the Mayor closes the hearing. Council will then debate and vote on the matter.

All of this is recorded and live streamed. You can watch it later on the Meetings & Agendas page. Your name and address will be added to the public record along with your comments.
