Fire safety education for kids
Teach your children how to stay safe around fire. Early education helps them become responsible teens and adults. The Wrenford Safety Squad is a free classroom program designed for students in grades 4 to 7. We bring a hands-on kit to your school that covers home fire safety, emergency planning, and what to do if they find a lighter or match. Each kit includes a home escape plan, a safety guide, and classroom activities that take about 45 minutes. To request a kit or book a presentation, email [email protected].
Book a firehall tour
School and community groups can visit Fire Station 1 to meet firefighters and see the trucks. These tours are a great way for kids to learn about emergency response in a safe environment. Contact the station at least four weeks in advance. You can reach the front desk at 519-555-0115 or email [email protected]. Tours are subject to availability and may be interrupted if an alarm sounds. When that happens, visitors must leave the building immediately and wait outside until the trucks return. One adult must supervise every five children. We do not host birthday parties at the firehall, but you can schedule a tour before or after a party you are hosting elsewhere.
Wrenford Youth Fire Academy
For older youth, Camp Tamsin offers a week-long fire academy experience for students ages 12 to 17. This free program teaches fire prevention, equipment handling, emergency response basics, and career pathways in public safety. Participants get hands-on training with trained firefighters and receive a camp uniform and certificate. The academy runs each August and fills up quickly. Registration opens the first Monday of December through the Recreation Portal. About 200 youth complete the program each year.
Youth Firesetter Intervention Program
If you know a child or teen who has set fires or shows a strong fascination with playing with fire, please call us. The Youth Firesetter Intervention Program is a free, confidential service for young people who have set fires or are drawn to playing with fire. Our fire prevention staff will interview parents, visit the home to check smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, and hold education sessions with the youth to teach them about fire consequences and safer behaviour. You can call the program hotline at 519-555-0115 or email [email protected]. Anyone—a parent, teacher, neighbour, or friend—can make a referral.
Tips for keeping your home safe
- Keep matches and lighters out of reach and sight of children.
- Teach young children to tell an adult if they find matches or lighters.
- Explain that fire is a tool for adults, not a toy.
- Supervise children around cooking and heating appliances.
- Install at least one working smoke alarm on every level of your home, including the basement.
- Make sure every sleeping area has a smoke alarm.
- Create and practice a home escape plan with your family twice a year.
