Resources for older drivers

Information on driver assessments, alternative transit, and road safety improvements for seniors in Wrenford.

Staying safe on the road

Driving gives you independence, but as we age, our eyesight, reaction times, and flexibility can change. The City of Wrenford wants to help you stay safe on the road and plan for alternative transportation if needed. This page covers driver assessment resources, workshop information, and local transit options.

Driver assessment and workshops

You can take a free driver assessment through the Wrenford Access office at the Downtown Transit Terminal. These assessments check your vision, mobility, and cognitive skills to see if you still meet the requirements for a Class G driver’s licence. The assessment is confidential and does not affect your insurance or licence status.

For those who want to refresh their skills, the City runs the Wrenford Senior Driver Workshop every spring and fall. Led by certified traffic instructors, these workshops cover defensive driving techniques, dealing with complex intersections, and adjusting to new road rules. Registration opens the first Monday of March and the first Monday of September. Contact the Accessible Recreation Programs team at [email protected] or call 519-555-0100.

Alternative transportation options

If you decide to stop driving, or just want to skip the hassle during bad weather, Wrenford Transit has you covered. Our fixed-route buses run seven days a week, covering all major neighbourhoods and downtown. You can pay your fare with cash or a monthly pass at the Downtown Transit Terminal.

For door-to-door service, Wrenford Access provides specialized transit for residents who cannot use the fixed-route buses due to a mobility limitation. You can book a ride at least one day in advance. The Downtown Transit Terminal is the main booking hub, and staff there can help you set up a regular weekly schedule. Call 519-555-0114 to learn more.

Road safety and infrastructure upgrades

The City is constantly working to make our streets safer for everyone, especially older drivers and pedestrians. Our Mobility team is rolling out several projects this year, including:

  • Extending crossing islands and adding pedestrian hybrid signals at busy intersections.
  • Upgrading signal timing to give drivers and walkers more time to cross safely.
  • Repairing curb ramps and installing tactile paving at key bus stops and community centres.
  • Adding clear signage and rumble strips in neighbourhoods with high traffic speeds.

These changes follow the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005 (AODA) and our own Accessibility Policy Refresh 2026. If you notice a specific road hazard in your area, report it using Wrenford 311 or submit a Service Request through the City website.
