What the water shut off key is for
The water shut off key lets you stop the water flow to your property. It is designed for water service pipes that measure 50 mm (2 in) or smaller. If your property uses a water service pipe larger than 50 mm, you must use our online form to request a City crew to shut off your water.
How to use a newer shut off valve
Newer valves only need a quarter turn to work. To stop the water, turn the key clockwise. To start the water again, turn the key counter-clockwise.
How to use an older shut off valve
Older valves change the water flow rate as you turn them. You must turn the key slowly in small steps.
- To stop the water: Turn the key clockwise. Keep turning until the flow stops completely.
- To start the water: Turn the key counter-clockwise. Keep turning until the water reaches the normal level for your home.
Sometimes a valve can be tight and need a little extra effort to turn. If it feels stuck, do not force it. Call us for help.
Valve position indicators
You can tell if your valve is open or closed by looking at the lock or handle on the key:
- Open: The lock is in line with the water supply pipe.
- Closed: The lock is 90 degrees (perpendicular) to the water supply pipe.
Reporting a broken shut off valve
If you turn the key and it spins around continuously without changing the water flow, the valve is likely broken. Please report broken valves using our online reporting tool.
Important: Under certain circumstances, a call-out fee may apply for the type of service you request.
