Boil water advisory information

Learn why boil water advisories happen, what to do during one, and how we notify you in Wrenford.

What is a boil water advisory?

A boil water advisory is a precautionary measure we take when we suspect harmful microbes, such as E. coli or Giardia, might be in your drinking water. This can happen if there is a water main break, a leak in the system, or if water pressure drops unexpectedly. Boiling the water kills these microbes, making it safe to drink.

How will I know?

Our team will deliver door-knocker notices to homes and businesses in the affected area. If the area is large, we will post updates on our Service Alerts page and use electronic message boards near key locations. For urgent updates, you can also check our social media channels.

What should I do?

Bring all water to a rolling boil for at least one minute before using it. Use boiled water or bottled water for:

  • Drinking or making beverages
  • Preparing baby formula and washing bottles
  • Making ice cubes
  • Brushing teeth or rinsing your mouth
  • Washing and preparing raw foods

Throw away any ice, food, or drinks made with unboiled water once the advisory starts. Adults and older children can shower safely. For young children, use a sponge bath to avoid swallowing water.

What happens after the advisory?

We will lift the advisory once water tests confirm the water is safe. This usually takes about two days after repairs are finished, allowing time for lab testing. We will deliver rescind notices door-to-door and post updates online. Once the advisory is lifted, run your cold water tap for one to two minutes to flush the system.
