Request a sidewalk construction

Learn how to request a new sidewalk for your street and what happens during the review process.

Road reconstruction on an urban street: excavator, traffic cones, a paid-duty flagger, new curbs being formed

When the City builds new sidewalks

You can ask the City to build a new sidewalk on a street that does not have one. The City usually adds sidewalks during road reconstruction projects or when new housing is built. If your street needs a sidewalk, you can submit a formal request.

How to submit a request

Visit the online form or pick up a paper copy at the customer service counter. Fill in your name, the street address, and a short note about why the sidewalk is needed. You can drop the form at Room 105, Wrenford City Hall, or email it to [email protected].

What happens during the review

Once we receive your request, the Roads & Winter Maintenance team reviews it. They check the street for safety, traffic volume, and nearby schools or parks. This review is part of the Sidewalk Request Assessment Programme. You will receive a letter with a decision within 8 to 10 weeks. If the request is approved, the City will schedule the construction. If it is not approved, the letter will explain why and what options you have next.

Costs and timelines

For most public requests in existing neighbourhoods, the City covers the full cost. New housing developers pay for sidewalks on their own land. If your request is approved, construction usually starts the following spring. The Sidewalk Construction Standards By-law 2026-095 sets the rules for materials and safety during the build.
