Request a new street light

How to request a new street light or report a broken one, what information we need, and how we decide where to install them.

Request a new street light

Do you want a new street light near your home or business? You can submit a request online. City staff will review your request and email you an update on whether it meets our installation criteria.

Report a broken street light

If a street light is out, broken, flickering, or damaged, report it using the same online form. Our maintenance crews will visit the site and fix the issue as soon as possible. We check all reported lights within two business days.

How we decide where to install lights

We install new street lights when we are already doing road improvements or when a new neighbourhood is built. Street lighting is not free, so we follow a strict priority list. We rank requests based on safety needs, traffic volume, how many people will use the area, and whether the location meets provincial lighting standards.

If your request is approved, we will add it to our installation schedule. You will receive an email with a reference number and an estimated timeline.

What to include in your request

To help us review your request quickly, please provide the following information in the form:

  • The exact street address or intersection where you want the light.
  • Whether there is an existing pole, and if so, whether it is wood or metal.
  • A clear description of the issue or safety concern.
  • Your name, email address, and phone number so we can email you updates.

Important rules for new poles

New street light poles must be placed within one metre of a property corner. They cannot go in back lanes. We use flat lens fixtures to reduce light pollution and keep the light focused on the road.

If a new pole would conflict with your driveway, you will need to pay for any changes to the driveway or the cost to move the pole. We will work with you to find the best spot, but the property owner covers the expense.

LED upgrades

We are replacing older drop-style lenses with modern flat lens fixtures across the city. This upgrade reduces glare, saves energy, and lowers maintenance costs. If your area is scheduled for a retrofit, you will see the new fixtures installed during regular maintenance. We do not install shields on street lights, but we do retrofit older lenses with the newer flat type.

Our LED upgrade programme runs year-round. We prioritise intersections, high-traffic corridors, and areas with high pedestrian activity. You can check the status of ongoing projects on our Service Alerts page.

When you submit the form, you will get an automatic confirmation email. Keep this email for your records. Our engineering team reviews every request against our safety standards and budget. You will hear from a staff member by email within ten business days.

Please note that we do not install street lights in private driveways, laneways, or on private property. All requests must be for a public right-of-way.
