What is a storm drain?
Storm drains, also called catch basins, are the metal grates you see along curbs and in lanes. They take rain and melting snow off streets and sidewalks, move it through underground pipes, and release it into the Tamsin River. Wrenford has thousands of these drains across the city.
Why does water pool on the street?
During heavy rain or a quick spring thaw, the stormwater system can get overwhelmed. Temporary pooling is normal. However, if water stays on the road for more than two hours, the drain is likely clogged with leaves, ice, or trash. Clogged drains can cause property damage and create unsafe driving conditions.
How to report a drainage issue
If water is pooling on your street and has not drained after two hours, please report it. You can submit an online service request, call 311 from inside the city, or call 519-555-0100. If water is entering a building or vehicle, or if you see a safety hazard, call 911 or 311 immediately.
When you report, include your exact address and a photo of the pooling water. This helps our crews find the blocked drain faster. We process reports in order of priority. Safety hazards and threats to property are attended to first.
What happens after you report?
Our Roads and Winter Maintenance crews will investigate your report. In the winter, we use specialized steam equipment to thaw frozen catch basins. In the spring and fall, crews clear debris and inspect the underground pipes. For non-emergency reports, crews aim to respond within 2 business days.
How you can help keep drains clear
You can reduce flooding on your street by keeping water moving away from your home and away from the street:
- Keep positive drainage on your lot so water does not flow onto the sidewalk or road.
- Clear eavestroughs and downspouts regularly. Point downspouts at least two metres away from your foundation.
- Never sweep leaves, grass clippings, or ice melt into the storm drain.
- Maintain your sump pump and make sure it discharges at least two metres from your home.
- Keep swales and grassy areas on your property free of trash and obstructions.
If you notice a missing grate or a drain that is completely blocked under the grate, do not try to open it yourself. Call 311 right away so crews can send the right tools. For more information on how the system works, see the Street drainage and catch basins page.
