What is a sewer lateral?

The sewer lateral is the pipe that connects your property to the city's main sewer line under the street. You are responsible for maintaining the lateral from your building to the city main. Regular inspections help catch problems early and avoid costly repairs or basement backups.

When to request an inspection

  • Before purchasing a property
  • After a sewage backup or slow drain
  • As part of routine maintenance
  • When planning major renovations

How to apply

Submit the Sewer Lateral Inspection Request Form online or by mail. You must include:

  • Full property address
  • Legal description (from your property assessment notice)
  • Proof of ownership or a signed letter of consent from the owner
  • Contact information

Inspections are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis. You will receive a confirmation email with your appointment date and a link to the pre-inspection checklist.

The inspection process

A certified contractor will send a camera down your lateral line. The video is reviewed by a City planner to check for blockages, root intrusion, bellies, or structural damage. You will receive a digital report and a copy of the video within 10 business days.

Fees and payment

The fee for a standard sewer lateral inspection is $250.00. This covers the camera inspection, report, and video. Payment is due at the time of booking. If you need a second inspection because the first could not reach the main, a reduced fee of $100.00 applies. You can pay online through the City portal or by calling City Services at 519-555-0100.

What if problems are found?

Property owners are responsible for repairing their sewer laterals. If the report shows a serious issue, you will have 90 days to hire a licensed plumber or contractor to fix it. The City can perform emergency repairs if a backup is imminent, and will bill you for the cost. For help finding a contractor, see the Protecting our sewer system guide.
