Waste management facility tour application

Apply for a free guided tour of the East Wrenford Waste Management Facility for your Grade 4 to 7 class.

About the tour

Take your Grade 4 to 7 class on a free, guided tour of the East Wrenford Waste Management Facility. Students will see how the City handles garbage, recycling, and organic waste, and learn how they can help keep waste out of the landfill. The tour is part of the city's Waste Wise education programme.

How to apply

Schools apply through the Waste Wise School Tours programme. We accept applications on a first-come, first-served basis. You must submit your request at least thirty business days before your preferred date. Late requests will be placed on a waitlist.

  1. Fill out the School Tour Request Form online or by email.
  2. Include your preferred date, the number of students, and any accessibility needs.
  3. Wait for a confirmation email from the Waste Programs team.

What to expect

The tour takes three hours and is split into two parts:

  • Classroom workshop (90 minutes): Waste educators lead interactive activities about the 3 R's (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) and how organic matter breaks down. Students learn how to sort their household waste correctly and explore the What goes in the green bin guide.
  • Guided bus tour (90 minutes): A safe, covered bus takes students through the East Wrenford Waste Management Facility. Staff explain how landfill cells are built, how the City manages hazardous waste, and why diversion programs matter.

Fees and rules

The tour is free for Wrenford schools. However, you must arrange your own bus transportation to and from the facility. We recommend bringing a packed lunch, as there are no food vendors on site.

Safety and conduct rules:

  • All students must stay with their teacher and follow staff instructions at all times.
  • Closed-toe shoes are required for the bus tour portion to protect feet on the operational grounds.
  • Groups are limited to two classes (up to 30 students) per day.
  • No food or drinks are allowed on the bus or in the operational areas.
  • If your school needs to cancel, please give at least five business days notice so we can offer the slot to another school.
