What you can do
You can view exactly how your mayor and councillors are paid, how their ward budgets are spent, and how the mayor's office funds its operations. You can also read the full expense disclosure reports online, or visit City Hall to review the financial statements in person.
How the city tracks payments
All payments and expense claims are tracked through the City Clerk's Office and the finance policy team. Reports are published annually on the council accountability pages. The city uses a standard expense code system so you can see exactly what was purchased, who provided it, and why it was approved. You can search the reports by year, by ward, or by expense category.
Rules, salaries, and budgets
Base salaries, ward budgets, and expense deadlines are set out in the Remuneration and Expenses By-law 2026-110. The by-law ensures that public funds are used only for eligible municipal activities and that all officials follow strict conflict-of-interest rules.
Base salaries
Elected officials receive an annual base salary for their work. These amounts are reviewed each year as part of the budget process and are subject to standard income tax.
| Title | 2026 Base Salary |
|---|---|
| Mayor | $85,000.00 |
| Councillor | $45,000.00 |
Operating budgets
Officials need funds to carry out their duties. The city provides annual operating budgets for the mayor's office and for each ward.
- Mayor's Office Budget: $150,000.00 per year. This covers administrative staff, official events, and community outreach.
- Ward Budgets: $32,500.00 per year for each councillor. This covers ward office staff, research, communications, and constituency events.
Both budgets must be used only for eligible activities. Councillors cannot use their ward budget for personal travel or non-municipal political campaigns.
Ward budget increases (2023–2026)
City Council approved additional funding for ward budgets to cover rising costs and inflation.
| Year | Additional Base Amount | Total Ward Budget |
|---|---|---|
| 2023 | $0 | $32,500.00 |
| 2024 | $75,000.00 | $107,500.00 |
| 2025 | $75,000.00 | $107,500.00 |
| 2026 | $75,000.00 | $107,500.00 |
Expense reporting and disclosure
Transparency is a core priority for Wrenford. All eligible expenses incurred by the mayor and councillors must be tracked and reported.
- Expense deadlines: All elected officials must submit their expense disclosure statements by March 31 each year for the previous calendar year.
- Public access: The City Clerk's Office publishes all approved expense reports on the Councillor salaries and expenses page. You can view them by year and ward.
- Financial disclosure: Officials also file annual financial disclosure statements to declare assets and conflicts of interest. These are available at City Hall and through the Elections office.
Deferred remuneration
Officials who complete a full four-year term and do not seek re-election, or who are not re-elected, may receive deferred remuneration. This is calculated as one week's salary for each year of service, prorated for partial terms. The deferred amount is included in the final paycheque at the end of their term.
Who to contact
For questions about the remuneration by-law, budget allocations, or expense reports, contact the City Clerk's Office or the finance policy team.
