Utility bylaws and rates

Learn about the bylaws that set utility rates and service rules for water, wastewater, and waste collection in Wrenford.

What the bylaws cover

The City of Wrenford manages water, wastewater, and waste collection through two main municipal by-laws. These rules protect our infrastructure, keep rates fair, and ensure every resident gets reliable service.

  • Water and Wastewater By-law 2017-090 covers how water is treated, delivered, and used. It sets rules for water conservation, connections to the main lines, and disconnection during unpaid bills or emergencies.
  • Fees and Charges By-law 2025-151 lists the current rates for water, wastewater, and waste collection. Council reviews these rates every year to match the actual cost of running the systems.

How rates are set and billed

Utility rates in Wrenford are not flat. They are calculated based on your property type, water meter size, and the amount of water or waste you use. This keeps the system fair for everyone.

  • Residential customers pay a base rate plus a usage charge. Your bill reflects the actual litres you use.
  • Commercial and industrial customers are billed based on meter size and volume. Larger meters that draw more water at once carry a higher base charge to cover the cost of maintaining the distribution network.
  • Waste collection fees cover curbside garbage, Blue Box recycling, and Green Bin organics. If you use a private contractor for garbage, you still pay a disposal fee to the City to cover the cost of dumping waste at the East Wrenford Waste Management Facility.

Your utility charges appear on your property tax bill. Water bills are also sent separately every two months so you can track your usage. You can sign up for pre-authorized payment to spread the cost over the year.

Service rules and conservation

Wrenford's water comes from the Tamsin River and is treated at the Tamsin River Water Treatment Plant. To keep the supply safe and available for the future, the by-laws include strict conservation rules:

  • Do not drain hot tubs, swimming pools, or sump pumps onto streets, sidewalks, or parks.
  • During a water shortage, outdoor watering may be restricted to specific days based on your address.
  • You must report any leaks or continuous running water on your property within 24 hours.
  • Water meter boxes must remain clear and accessible for City staff.
