What the by-law covers
The Business Licensing By-law 2021-033 makes sure every business operating in Wrenford follows the same rules. It covers land use, building safety, and fair competition. The by-law applies to all businesses, including online stores that ship from a home address.
Who needs a licence
If you run a business in Wrenford, you need a licence. This includes:
- Home-based businesses operating on residential property
- Non-resident businesses that sell or provide services in the city without a physical shop
- Specialized businesses like pawn brokers, second-hand dealers, coin dealers, and tow truck operators
Non-profit corporations registered under provincial law are exempt, unless they operate a second-hand store, pawn shop, or coin dealership. If you are unsure, contact the Licensing Office.
Licence types and fees
Licences are valid for one calendar year from the date of issue. Fees must be paid to receive your certificate.
| Licence type | Annual fee |
|---|---|
| Residential business | $185.00 |
| Non-resident business | $425.00 |
| Pawn broker | $275.00 |
| Coin dealer | $310.00 |
| Second-hand dealer (electronic reporting) | $250.00 |
| Second-hand dealer (manual reporting) | $850.00 |
| Tow truck company | $210.00 |
Specialized licences require additional documentation. See the requirements section below.
Application requirements
You will need to provide the following information when you apply:
- A government-issued photo ID for the primary applicant
- A valid business name registration from the provincial Information Services Corporation
- Written consent from the property owner if you rent the space (Landlord Consent Form)
- Proof of zoning compliance for your property
- For specialized businesses: a criminal record check, fire inspection clearance, and insurance certificates
Once you submit your application, staff will review it. You will hear back within three to five business days. If we need more documents, we will email you. After approval, you must display your licence in a visible spot at your business location. The licence is not transferable to another person or address.
Residential business rules
If you run a business from home, the by-law sets clear limits to keep your neighbourhood quiet and safe:
- You may use up to 25 per cent of your home's total floor space for business activities
- No exterior storage of goods or equipment is allowed at the residence
- You may only sell items that you create or assemble on-site
- No window displays or outdoor signage are permitted
- One extra parking space is required if you use a business vehicle
Child care homes and clinics follow separate provincial rules. They must still register with the city for zoning purposes.
Renewals and changes
We mail renewal notices in late January. You can pay online or by mail. If your business closes, or if your name, address, or phone number changes, please let us know right away so we can update our records.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a liquor licence or health permit?
Yes. The city business licence does not replace provincial or federal permits. You must obtain separate approvals for food service, liquor sales, and health inspections before opening.
What happens if I operate without a licence?
Operating without a licence is a violation of the by-law. By-law Enforcement officers can issue a fine or a stop-work order. We prefer to help you get registered, but we will take action if a business refuses to comply.
How do I check if my property is zoned for my business?
Visit the Zoning bylaws and land use page to view the zoning map and rules. You can also contact the Licensing Office for a quick check.
