When you can make construction noise
Construction is a necessary part of a growing city, but we balance it with the need for quiet in residential areas. Under the Noise by-law 2016-122, construction noise is only allowed during specific times. Following these hours helps keep our neighbourhoods comfortable for everyone.
- Monday to Friday: 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
- Saturday: 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
- Sunday and statutory holidays: No construction-related noise is permitted.
These hours apply to work on private property and on city streets, lanes, and boulevards. Quiet hours are enforced from 10:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. every day. If you are a contractor, you must plan your schedule to avoid disturbing residents during these times.
What counts as construction noise?
The by-law covers a wide range of activities that create loud sounds or vibrations. This includes, but is not limited to:
- Erecting, altering, repairing, or demolishing a building or structure
- Earth moving, grading, excavating, and laying underground pipes or conduits
- Concrete pouring and setting up stage structures for events
- Operating heavy machinery, compressors, jackhammers, or power tools
- Installing or removing construction equipment and materials
- Land clearing and site preparation
How to apply for a noise exception permit
If your project must happen outside the permitted hours, you can apply for a Noise by-law exception permit. You will need to submit your application at least five business days before the work is scheduled to start. Our team reviews each request to ensure community impact is minimized.
Application fee: $75.00
To apply, please contact By-law Enforcement with your project details, including the site address, dates, and requested hours. You must also explain why the work cannot be done during standard hours. Our officers will review your request and notify affected neighbours before issuing a permit.
- Email: [email protected]
- Phone: 519-555-0100
- Contact: Noah Feldman, Manager, By-law Enforcement
Permit holders must notify all adjacent residents and businesses at least three days before the work begins. You are also responsible for using noise-mitigation measures, such as sound barriers, acoustic blankets, or quiet equipment, to keep disturbance to a minimum. We reserve the right to alter or revoke a permit if serious or repeated complaints are received.
Report a noise concern
If you hear construction noise happening outside the permitted hours or without a valid permit, you can report it. Our officers will investigate the complaint and take appropriate action to enforce the by-law. You can find the full text of the by-law and other related rules below.
