When and where meetings are held

City Council meets twice a month on the second and fourth Monday at 6:00 p.m. Regular meetings are held in the Council Chambers at City Hall. You can also join the live stream online. Other committees, like the Planning and Environment Committee, meet on different dates. Check the Council meeting schedules page for the full calendar.

How to attend

You can watch the meetings from home using the live stream link on the City website. If you want to watch in person, the Council Chambers are on the second floor of City Hall at 100 Mercer Street. The accessible entrance is on Water Street.

Seats are first come, first served. Arrive at least 15 minutes before the start time to get through security and find a seat. Meetings cover topics like the annual budget, local by-laws, and city planning. Decisions are made by vote at the end of each item.

How to speak at a meeting

If you want to say something to Council, you must register in advance. The deadline to register is 4:30 p.m. on the Friday before the meeting. You can register using the Public Submission form on the website or by calling the City Clerk's office.

Once registered, you will get a confirmation email with your speaking slot and a virtual attendance link if you prefer to speak remotely.

Each person gets a five-minute speaking limit. This time does not include answering questions from councillors. Keep your comments focused on the agenda item being discussed. You can speak for yourself or on behalf of a group, but you only get five minutes total.

For more details on how to prepare your remarks, visit Prepare to address council or committees.

Accessibility and security

All visitors to City Hall go through a metal detector screening. Please arrive early if you need extra time. If you have a medical device that might set off the alarm, tell the security staff so they can use a hand-held wand.

The City is committed to making meetings accessible to everyone. If you need an accommodation, like an interpreter or large-print materials, please let the City Clerk's office know at least two weeks before the meeting. Visit Accessibility for council meetings for more information.
