What is a home-based business?
A home-based business operates from your private residence in Wrenford. You must have a valid business licence before you start. The Business Licensing By-law 2021-033 sets out the rules to keep your neighbourhood quiet, safe, and compatible for everyone. Whether you are selling crafts online, offering tutoring, or providing remote consulting, the same rules apply.
How to apply
You can apply online through the Wrenford Business Portal or pick up a paper form at the Home-Based Business Licensing Desk. Please bring proof of your property zoning. The Planning and Development team will review your application within five business days. If your property is not zoned for a home business, you will need to apply for a minor variance through the Committee of Adjustment first. You can download the zoning map and district definitions to check your property before you start.
Checking your zoning and neighbourhood impact
Before you apply, make sure your property is allowed to host a business. Most residential zones permit home occupations, but some have limits on the percentage of floor space you can use. You must also complete the Neighbourhood Compatibility Checklist. This short form asks you to confirm that your business will not create extra parking demands, increase noise, or bring customers to your door throughout the day. The Start a Business Guide walks you through this step by step.
Rules and conditions
Wrenford wants home businesses to thrive without disrupting daily life. Your licence comes with these standard conditions:
- No external signs or waiting areas. Customers cannot park in your driveway or line up on your lawn. You may not install yard signs or window decals that advertise your business.
- No heavy equipment or hazardous materials. This includes industrial machinery, storage tanks, or chemicals that could pose a risk to neighbours or first responders.
- Limited traffic and noise. You cannot increase vehicle trips or noise levels beyond what a typical household generates. Delivery trucks are not permitted for regular client drop-offs.
- Compliance visits. By-law Enforcement officers may visit your home to make sure you follow these rules. They will always wear a uniform and show identification.
Fees and renewal
The annual licence fee is $125.00. Licences run from January 1 to December 31. You will receive a renewal reminder by email in early December. If you pay late, a ten per cent fee will be added after January 31. Licences are continuous from year to year unless you notify us that you are closing the business.
