Start a business in Wrenford
Whether you are launching a new venture or expanding an existing one, this guide walks you through the steps to open your doors in Wrenford. We cover registration, licences, permits, zoning, taxes, and where to find local support.
1. Choose your business structure
Decide how your business will be legally set up. You can operate as a sole proprietorship, a partnership, a corporation, or a cooperative. Each structure has different tax implications and liability rules. Visit the Government of Canada website to compare business types and see which fits your goals.
2. Register your business name
Before you apply for a municipal licence, you need to register your business name with the Province of Ontario. If you are operating under a name other than your own, you must register a sole proprietorship or partnership through the Ontario Business Registry. If you are incorporating, apply through the Ontario Business Registry as well. You can also reserve a name online through the Government of Canada.
3. Check zoning and find a location
Not every business can open just anywhere. Check the Zoning to make sure your desired address allows your type of operation. The Official Plan also guides where commercial and industrial uses are permitted. If your location is in the Downtown BIA, ask the BIA about tenant attraction programs and seasonal activations. You can look up zoning details by contacting [email protected] or visiting our intake desk.
4. Apply for a business licence
Every business operating in Wrenford needs a municipal licence under Business Licences. Licences expire on December 31 each year. Fees depend on your business type and location:
- Residential address: $125.00
- Commercial or industrial address: $250.00
- One-time application fee: $50.00
Processing takes about five business days after we receive a complete application. You can apply in person, by email, or by mail. Include all required documents, such as your certificate of name registration and proof of insurance. Visit Apply for a business licence to download forms and check current fees.
5. Get permits and approvals
Depending on what you sell or do, you may need additional permits. Food service businesses require a permit from Tamsin Valley Public Health. If you plan to serve alcohol, you must apply for a Liquor and cannabis retail licences through the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario and notify the City. Outdoor seating, signage, and home-based operations each have their own rules. See Bylaws and regulations for businesses for a full list.
6. Set up taxes and payroll
Register for a Goods and Services Tax (GST) account with the Canada Revenue Agency if your annual sales exceed $30,000. If you hire employees, you must register for a Payroll Deductions account and follow the Employment Standards Act, 2000. You will also need to register for Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) coverage. Visit the Government of Canada website for detailed guides on taxes and hiring.
