Security and alarm system permits

You must have a security alarm permit for your home or business to get police response and keep your alarm company active. Renew it every year.

What is a security alarm permit?

If you have a security alarm system for your home or business in Wrenford, you must register it with the city and renew the permit every year. Security alarm permits are non-transferable. They stay attached to your specific address and the name on the application. If you move or sell your business, the permit does not go with you. You must apply for a new one at your new location.

Why you need an active permit

Having a valid permit is required for two main reasons:

  • Police response: If your permit is expired or invalid, the Wrenford Police Service may not send officers to your property when the alarm is triggered.
  • Alarm company service: Your alarm monitoring provider will not service your property without a current city permit on file.

Car alarms do not require a permit.

Manage your permit

You can apply for a new permit, renew an existing one, or update your information online through the Wrenford Business Portal. You can also visit the business licensing office in person.

Use the online portal to:

  • Apply for a new alarm permit for your home or business.
  • Renew your annual permit.
  • Update your mailing address, keyholder details, or alarm company information.
  • Cancel your permit when you remove the battery and disconnect the system.

Handling false alarms

False alarms cost the city and the police service time and resources. If you regularly experience false alarms, contact your alarm company right away. Make sure your keyholder list is up to date and have your system inspected annually to find the cause.

Under Security Alarm Permit By-law 2020-045, three false alarms in a 12-month period will result in a 30-day permit suspension. You must have your system inspected and certified by a licensed technician before the suspension ends and police response resumes.
