Why businesses are inspected
Business licence inspections make sure your operations follow Wrenford's by-laws. Inspections happen for three main reasons:
- Initial approval: New businesses or those changing locations may need a fire safety or property standards check before their licence is issued.
- Complaints: Neighbours or customers may report issues like noise, odours, parking problems, or unsafe conditions.
- Routine checks: City staff may visit to verify that your business still meets the requirements of your licence and by-laws.
What inspectors check
Depending on your business type, an inspector from By-law Enforcement or the Fire Prevention Bureau will review:
- Fire extinguishers, exits, and signage
- Parking lot safety and accessibility
- Noise levels and operating hours
- Waste storage and outdoor signage
- Zoning compliance (what you are allowed to do at your address)
How to request an inspection
You can request an inspection for your own business or report a concern about a neighbour. Use one of these methods:
- Online: Log in to the Wrenford Business Portal and select "Request Inspection" from your dashboard.
- Phone: Call 519-555-0100 and ask for the Business Licensing office.
- Email: Send details to [email protected].
Please include your business name, address, Business ID number, and a clear description of the issue or request. If you are reporting a concern about another business, you do not need to provide your name, but including it helps our team follow up with you.
What happens during an inspection
Inspectors carry photo identification and a City of Wrenford badge. They will explain why they are there and what they will check. If your business is open, they may speak with staff. If you are not available, they will leave a notice with instructions on how to schedule a follow-up visit.
Most inspections take between 30 and 60 minutes. Staff will provide immediate feedback on minor issues. For larger concerns, you will receive a written report within five business days.
Outcomes and next steps
After an inspection, you will receive one of the following:
- Compliance letter: Your business meets all requirements.
- Corrective action notice: You have a set timeframe to fix specific issues. Most notices allow 14 days for minor repairs and 30 days for larger changes.
- By-law enforcement action: If issues are not resolved, the City may issue fines under the relevant by-law, such as the Traffic and Parking By-law 2014-075 or the Noise By-law 2016-122.
You can appeal a by-law decision by visiting the Business licence appeals and hearings page.
