What is the Heritage Management Plan?
The Heritage Management Plan is Wrenford's guide for looking after our historic places. It explains how the City protects, cares for, and adapts buildings, landscapes, and sites that hold special value for our community. The plan works alongside the City of Wrenford Official Plan and the Zoning By-law to make sure new development respects our history.
How the plan works
The plan sets out clear steps for property owners, developers, and City staff. It covers three main areas:
- Protecting heritage resources through legal tools like the Heritage Register and heritage conservation districts.
- Managing change through heritage alteration permits and development reviews.
- Supporting conservation through financial incentives and technical guidance.
Working with a heritage property
If your property is on the Heritage Register or falls inside a heritage conservation district, any major changes must follow the Heritage Management Plan. You will need to submit a heritage alteration permit application. City staff will review the proposal to ensure the building's character-defining features are preserved. For complex projects, a heritage conservation plan or heritage impact statement may be required.
Funding and incentives
Wrenford offers several programs to help property owners keep their historic buildings in good shape. The Heritage Conservation Grant Program provides cost-sharing for eligible projects. The Downtown Historic District Maintenance Grant covers up to 40 per cent of exterior conservation costs for properties in the downtown core. You can find application details and current funding limits on the grants page.
Keeping the plan current
The Heritage Management Plan is a living document. It is reviewed regularly by the Heritage Advisory Committee and City staff to reflect new research, conservation techniques, and community goals. Public feedback is welcomed during each review cycle. When updates are made, they are reported to Council and added to the City's history resources.
