Zoning bylaw signage exceptions

Learn when temporary signage is exempt from standard development standards in Wrenford.

Temporary Signage Exceptions

You may need to display temporary signs for events, sales, or political campaigns. In most cases, the Zoning bylaw sets strict rules for size, placement, and duration. However, there are specific situations where these development standards do not apply.

When Standards Do Not Apply

The City recognizes that certain temporary displays serve the public interest or involve minimal impact on the streetscape. You do not need to meet the usual height, setback, or area limitations for the following:

  • Political Signs: Signs related to municipal, provincial, or federal elections during the official campaign period.
  • Open House Signs: A single "For Sale" or "Open House" sign placed on residential properties during the listing period.
  • Construction Signs: One sign per active construction site, provided it does not obstruct traffic or pedestrian visibility.
  • Community Events: Temporary banners or signs for festivals and markets approved through the Request use of municipal property process.

Important Conditions

Even when development standards are waived, you must still follow general safety and maintenance rules. Signs must be securely anchored and removed promptly after the event or sale concludes. Leaving signs up beyond the permitted time may result in removal by the City and a fine.

If you are unsure if your property is in a zone that allows signage, check the Land use districts and zones. For more details on how the Zoning bylaw works, visit Zoning bylaw basics and frequently asked questions.
