Register a heritage property

Learn how to apply to register a property on the Wrenford Heritage Register and discover the incentives available to owners.

What you can do

You can apply to have a property added to the Wrenford Heritage Register. Listing a property officially recognises its cultural, historical, or architectural value. This helps spread awareness of the place and ensures it is considered in future planning and development decisions. Once registered, property owners become eligible for heritage grants, conservation incentives, and free brass markers through the Heritage Plaque Program.

How to apply

Property owners, or members of the public with the owner's written consent, can apply through a self-initiated application. You do not need a development permit to start this process. Follow these steps to prepare and submit your application.

Step 1: Gather information about the place

Collect the following details:

  • Full address and building name (if applicable).
  • Year of construction.
  • A description of the surroundings, nearby buildings, and landscape features.
  • Current use of the property and who uses it.
  • Any known connections to Indigenous cultural heritage, equity-denied communities, or living cultural heritage.
  • A brief explanation of why you believe the property should be registered.

Step 2: Take and find photos

Provide clear photographs showing all exterior sides, architectural features (windows, porches, roof details), and notable interior finishes. Include street view photos. If you have archival or historical photos, include those too and note where you found them.

Step 3: Write about the heritage value

Explain why the property matters. Describe its cultural traditions, historical connections, or architectural features. Identify the builders, designers, or original owners. Note any major changes or alterations over time and the current physical condition of the building.

Step 4: Submit your application

Combine your written information, photos, and any supporting documents (like historical maps, blueprints, or newspaper articles) into a single package. Name your files using the format: [Property Address] – Heritage Register Application – [Document Name].

You can submit your application in one of three ways:

  • Online: Use the city's online service portal.
  • By mail: Send your documents to the Planning Department, Heritage Group, Room 305, Wrenford City Hall, 100 Mercer Street, Wrenford, ON N4Q 1A1.
  • In person: Drop off your application at the Service Wrenford counter in the front lobby of Wrenford City Hall, 100 Mercer Street.

If you are not the property owner, you must include a signed Property Owner Permission Letter.

Rules and incentives

To be considered, a place must be at least 20 years old and show heritage value in one of these areas:

  • Cultural heritage: Traditions, ways of life, memories, or community identity.
  • Historical association: Connections to a notable person, event, or community group.
  • Architecture: Distinctive design, materials, technology, or landscape features.

The application process is free. There is no charge to register a property. Once registered, your property becomes eligible for heritage rehabilitation grants and conservation incentives under the Wrenford Heritage Conservation Districts and Properties Policy. If you plan to make changes to a registered or designated property, you will need a heritage alteration permit.

What happens next

Heritage staff will review your application and assess it against the city's evaluation criteria. If the application meets the standards, it will be presented to the Heritage Advisory Committee for a recommendation, and then to City Council for a final decision. You will be notified of the outcome in writing.
