What you need to include
Your plan must cover the stairs, landings, and any fire escapes that connect to the main building. Include these items in your submission:
- A site map showing every exterior stair and landing.
- Clear measurements of the stair width and the distance from the top of the stairs to the nearest exit.
- A schedule for monthly checks. You must log any loose boards, rusted bolts, or damaged handrails.
- A weather tag system. Every exterior stair on a building over three storeys must have a weather-resistant tag visible from the ground. The tag shows whether the stairs are safe to use, need caution, or are unsafe.
- A list of the professional engineer who inspects the stairs. Ontario law requires a licensed structural engineer to test and repair exterior egress structures on buildings over three storeys.
How to submit your plan
Upload your plan through the Service Wrenford portal. You will need your property address and building permit number ready.
- Fee: $150.00 initial review fee.
- Processing time: three business days.
You must update the plan every 12 months or whenever you make changes to the stairs.
Inspections and maintenance
The Wrenford Fire Prevention Office checks exterior stairs during routine site visits. Keep these areas clear of snow, ice, and stored items. You must keep a 1.5-metre path clear around all stairs and landings. Do not store boxes, bikes, or recycling bins on the stairs or in the stairwell.
If your building is over three storeys, the engineer must attach a new weather tag after every major inspection or storm. Post the tag where anyone can see it from the sidewalk.

What happens if you miss the deadline
Keep your plan current. If you do not submit the annual update, we will send a compliance order. Repeated late submissions can lead to fines under the Fire Protection and Prevention Act, 1997. You can submit updates or resubmit corrected plans through the same online portal at any time.
