What is a fire notification plan?

A fire notification plan explains how your building will alert the Wrenford Police Service and Wrenford Fire Rescue when a fire alarm goes off. The Ontario Fire Code requires buildings with monitored fire alarm systems to have a plan on file with the City. The plan ensures emergency services get accurate details so they can respond quickly and safely.

Who needs a plan?

You need a fire notification plan if your building has a fire alarm system that sends signals to a central monitoring station or a private alarm company. This includes most commercial properties, multi-unit residential buildings, schools, and institutions. If your building has a local alarm that only sounds inside the structure, you may not need a full notification plan, but you must still follow the Ontario Fire Code.

How to submit your plan

All fire notification plans must be submitted through the Fire Prevention online portal. Follow these steps:

  1. Complete the Fire Notification Plan application form.
  2. Attach a copy of your monitoring contract with the alarm company.
  3. Include a diagram showing how alarms connect to the central station.
  4. Pay the review fee online.

Our inspectors review submissions within five business days. If your plan needs changes, we will contact you through the portal. Once approved, your plan is active for one year. You must update it if your monitoring contract or building details change.

Fees

Review fees for fire notification plans are set out in the Fees and Charges By-law 2025-151. Fees are due when you submit your application.

Service Fee
Initial plan review $150.00
Re-inspection or plan update $175.00

What happens after approval?

Once your plan is approved, the monitoring station will send alarm signals directly to Wrenford 9-1-1. You must test your system regularly and keep records. Our Fire Prevention team may visit your site to verify that the notification system matches your approved plan. If we find discrepancies, we will issue a compliance order. You will have thirty days to fix any issues before we schedule a follow-up inspection.

Monitoring and testing requirements

Your monitoring station must be licensed in Ontario and available twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. They must send alarm signals directly to Wrenford 9-1-1. If your current station does not meet these rules, you must switch before submitting your plan. Keep monthly test records on site for at least three years. We may ask to see these during a routine visit. If a test shows a fault, you must fix it within forty-eight hours and notify the monitoring station.
