Why you need a fire safety plan for fire elevators

If your building in Wrenford is equipped with elevators, the Ontario Fire Code requires a fire safety plan that covers how those elevators operate during an emergency. This plan keeps building occupants safe and gives firefighters the information they need to use the elevators for rescue and access.

What your plan must cover

Your fire safety plan must include clear procedures for elevator operation during a fire. Key elements include:

  • Elevator recall: Instructions for how elevators automatically return to a designated floor when a fire alarm activates.
  • Firefighter service: Steps for authorized emergency responders to take control of elevator operations using a key switch.
  • Emergency communication: Verification that an emergency two-way communication system works between the elevator car and the fire command centre or building management.
  • Shutdown procedures: Clear directions for shutting down elevators that are not required for emergency use.
  • Regular testing: A schedule for monthly elevator recall and communication tests, with records kept on site for three years.

How to submit your plan

Submit your completed fire safety plan for fire elevators through the Fire Prevention online portal. You will need to upload the plan document and pay the initial review fee.

Fees and processing time

The initial review fee for a fire elevator safety plan is $225.00. The Fire Prevention team will review your submission within five business days. If revisions are needed, we will contact you with specific feedback. Once approved, your plan must be reviewed and updated annually.
