Heritage preservation grants
Wrenford is proud of its history. From the old mills along the river to the historic homes in the Benchlands, these buildings tell our story. The City offers grants to help you restore, repair, or preserve structures that hold significant heritage value. This funding supports projects that keep our character intact while improving safety and energy efficiency.
Who can apply
You may apply if you own a property listed on the Wrenford Heritage Register. This includes private homeowners, community groups, and non-profit organizations. The property must be located within the City limits, whether you live in Downtown, Riverside Flats, or Ambrel Lake. You must be current on all property taxes and local by-laws to be eligible.
What is covered
Grants are available for exterior restoration work that maintains historical accuracy. This includes repairing original windows, repointing masonry, restoring decorative trim, and stabilizing structural elements. We also support projects that improve accessibility without altering the heritage character. Costs for interior renovations, new construction, or routine maintenance are not eligible.
How to apply
Start by reviewing the Heritage Register to see if your property is listed. If it is, you must submit a detailed proposal. This should include photos, a description of the work, and quotes from contractors. You must also provide a heritage impact statement explaining how your project preserves the building’s historical features.
Applications are reviewed by the Heritage Committee. They look for projects that demonstrate strong community benefit and careful planning. You will hear back from us within 30 days of your submission date. If your application is approved, you must begin the work within one year. All completed projects require a final inspection to release the remaining funds.
Need help?
Restoring an old building can be complex. The City offers free consultations with heritage planners to help you understand the rules. They can also point you toward other resources. If you are interested in making your property more accessible, look at the Accessible playground grants for ideas on inclusive design. For those interested in broader community improvements, the Community beautification grants may complement your heritage project.
