What is a heritage conservation district?
Heritage conservation districts protect groups of historic buildings that together tell the story of Wrenford. Our primary district is the Downtown Historic District, which covers the original mill town grid around Mercer, Tamsin, Mill, and Water Streets. Established under By-law 2026-045, the district ensures that new development and renovations respect the character of our oldest neighbourhood. The plan sets out clear rules so that growth and updating happen without erasing the historic feel that makes our downtown unique.
Heritage assets and the guidelines
Buildings within the district are called heritage assets. To qualify, a building must retain a majority of its historic design and details visible from the street. While individual buildings may not be on the Heritage Register, they are still subject to the district's guidelines. These rules guide how you can alter, expand, or replace features like windows, doors, and facades. The goal is to keep the historic look alive while allowing your building to work for modern needs. The guidelines cover everything from brickwork and masonry to storefront glazing and rooflines.
Find your property on the map
You can check if your property is in the Downtown Historic District using the City's property maps. The map shows the exact boundaries of the district and highlights heritage assets. If you are planning a renovation or a new build, start by confirming your property's status. This helps you understand which guidelines apply to your site. You can also view the full boundary maps through the City's zoning and land use map tool.
Planning changes in the district
Any development inside the district must follow the supplementary guidelines attached to By-law 2026-045. If your project involves changing the exterior appearance of a heritage asset, you will need to submit a development permit. Our planning staff can review your plans early in the design phase to ensure they meet the guidelines. You can also look into the Downtown Historic District guidelines for specific details on materials, signage, and lighting. For larger projects, you may need to prepare a conservation plan or a statement of significance to show how your work protects the building's heritage value.
